Et bis repetita...! Here we are again, face to face with the coronavirus. An old adversary that we thought had been defeated once and for all. After three years of a bitter struggle which restricted our freedom of movement, replaced our warm embrace with cold physical distancing, devoured our financial resources, destroyed parts of our economy, and took away human lives, the respite will only be short-lived. For the enemy, COVID-19 is bouncing back. Clearly, its withdrawal from the health battlefield was no more than a strategic retreat - time enough to reconstitute itself, before launching a counter-offensive.
So Corona is back. In a different variant. Less symptomatic. Less easily detected. More virulent. And probably more deadly. The result, no doubt, of feedback from the bitter failure of its first attempt to de-populate the black race. Learned societies have always entertained the prospect of this comeback. This only adds to the already numerous concerns of humanity in turmoil. With confinements, deconfinements, reconfinements and other restrictive measures coming thick and fast, it’s a safe bet that the days ahead will be just as psychologically challenging.
Between the spectre of disappearance and the desire to survive, tossed back and forth by the sometimes reassuring, sometimes despairing vacillations of scientists unable to speak with one voice, thousands of people continued to be contaminated, and others to die. On top of that, the hysterical campaign to single out certain countries and age groups had led people to believe that others would be safe from the danger. We know what happened.
Moreover, there are serious grounds for questioning the intention of such rhetoric, which encourages inconsistency. Is it not a diversion designed to make us lower our guard, leaving us vulnerable to the COVID-19 counter-offensive? Such a point of view would not be far-fetched, especially as the pandemic has already taught us that, in the face of danger, friends who were once very close are now going it alone.
The fact remains, however, that the ravages of long-term disasters have become overwhelmingly commonplace because they have been served up repeatedly in every fashion. But it’s not just a question of making do with the presence of the enemy, the coronavirus. It’s not a matter of taking it for granted that it’s now endemic and that we can protect ourselves against it willy-nilly. On the contrary, our lucidity, our survival instinct and our capacity for revolt are as much at stake as our immune defences.
With the arrival of the new corona, let’s keep our fingers crossed that a new treatment war between medical luminaries, a new war to obtain masks, and a new vaccine war between pharmaceutical companies do not break out. Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and put a stop to this latest mutation of the coronavirus, given that every person suffering from the disease remains a serious candidate for death./-
