Honor and Loyalty : Training: core performance of the Cameroonian Army
A week ago, the high command announced the names of soldiers who were admitted to undertake a series of training courses known as the “Military Module”, which would go hand in hand with their technical qualifications. Needless to say, this goodwill gesture was warmly received by those soldiers in our units and formations who were waiting with justifiable impatience for this signal that made their long awaited promotion a possibility.
For it must be said that the power of contemporary armies, which claim to be republican, is no longer measured solely in their capacity to successfully conduct invasive operations. Increasingly, this disposition depends on the ease with which these armies can move from being entirely military, which is their primary attribution, to being entirely civilian, which is now an essential factor in the relationship with the people. Call it versatility or flexibility.
Invariably, for the Cameroonian Army, which remains a public service, meeting the demands of this operational duality requires a redoubling of its commitment to staff training. This is a remarkably costly effort, especially in this case, as it occurs in a context marked by increasing threats to security and the scarcity of financial resources, two prohibitive factors that are gradually driving the training offer towards a compression, or even a suppression.
Therefore, military personnel admitted to training should be aware of the hierarchy’s concern to safeguard their morale, by ensuring that their living and working conditions are the least restrictive possible. This awareness should be reflected in the training centre by sustained discipline, consistent attendance at training sessions and a determined effort.
In the field of operations, confronted with the adversary or in contact with the people, the training of the Cameroonian soldier enables him to fulfil his mission with the required professionalism, while respecting with sufficient insight the rules of engagement and the canons of International Humanitarian Law.
At the same time a defender of peace and security and a development actor, protector of the citizen and promoter of national cohesion, the well-trained soldier of Cameroon is a trump card in the pursuit of our country’s ambition to become an emerging nation.
