Very few of our compatriots are aware that the greatest achievement of the Cameroonian people in terms of multicultural harmony is none other than the Cameroonian Army, which was intended to be a unified and national force from its creation in November 1959, long before Cameroon gained international sovereignty.
The first task of this young Army was to recruit men from all over the country, while at the same time integrating our compatriots who were then serving under a foreign flag. This was the beginning of national integration. The Cameroonian Army cannot, therefore, be accused of tribalism.
Nor can it be accused of being monolingual in a bilingual country, although operational efficiency often, but fortunately not always, requires the use of a single language. Apart from this exception, which is incidental, our staff express themselves in our two official languages, each of them proudly mastering both languages.
When it comes to promoting living together at the national level, the Cameroonian military is unbeatable. How could it be otherwise, with the men and women who share the sometimes difficult daily life of our courageous people? We would like to be able to count their humanitarian actions geared towards people in need, here and there in our regions.
Even in the smallest of our Army’s health facilities, military personnel and civilians alike are consulted, treated and vaccinated. In fact, three-quarters of the patients are civilians. In barracks schools, military children receive the same education as their civilian brothers and sisters. And it only gets better. Faced with social and security unrest in certain parts of the country, the Cameroonian Army, a veritable crossroads of professions, sends its specialised personnel to support schools with a shortage of teachers.
This presence of soldiers in and around schools overcomes the reluctance of families who fear for the safety of their children. As for the children, they are happy to return to school, the pathway to a better future.
In terms of development, the Cameroonian military is demonstrating its immense expertise in the construction of roads, engineering works, buildings, sports grounds and telecommunications infrastructure. From Bakassi to Kousséri, from Bamenda to Bertoua, they work everywhere, in all seasons, especially in hostile areas.
The vitality of the national sports movement is also maintained by our brave soldiers, who bring honour to our country throughout the world. Who has not heard of the achievements of the teams of the Armed Forces and Police (FAP) in national and international competitions? Just to remind you, our military football team has won two African Cups and, just recently, the opening match and the final of the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt were refereed by a Cameroonian soldier.
This is not an exhaustive list, but it places our Army at the forefront of our citizens’ struggles. The Cameroonian Army is national and republican by nature, industrious and selfless by conviction. Rarely has an army been recognised and loved by its people, admired by other peoples and copied by other armies. Not to recognise this is at best bad faith and at worst ignorance. /-
