CAMEROON: Great challenges for 2022

Dear listeners, let us begin this editorial sequence from our unwavering tone of the Army and the Nation bond, with a reminder of the motto of the Cameroon Defence Forces, which is "Honour and Loyalty", to signal that the mystique of honour gives a meaning to life and attests to the existence of freedom. The mystique of honour involves a constant quest for greatness and an exaltation of virtue. Honour is indeed the blind and prestigious instrument of an almost divine mission, entrusted to those who accept servitude and self-sacrifice. It is the spirit of this mystique that animated the action and attitude of the Cameroonian Defence Forces in 2021.

This editorial, which as you are rightly noting, is the first for the year 2022. It is for us at the Ministry of Defence, a renewed pleasure to meet you through this trajectory to take a retrospective look at the action of our Defence and Security Forces at the twilight of the year 2021, and at the same time to outline the prospects for the year 2022.

You will undoubtedly have noticed that the year 2021 will have been rich in security challenges, the acts of hardening of irredentist and terrorist activities in our North West and South West Regions by having held the upper hand. In the Far North Region, although considerably weakened, Boko Haram has not said its last word.

The laying of improvised explosive devices on the roads, the introduction of bombs into university campuses and the use of heavy weapons by the seditious separatists, are all intolerable attacks on civil, political, economic social and cultural rights that the State strives to guarantee for our populations.

The appearance of this new situation, moreover fought with appropriate methods and means, will in no way have affected the determination of our Defence and Security Forces to ensure serenity and guarantee the exercise of the rights and freedoms of our compatriots. By protecting the infrastructure and members of the national educational community, who are particularly targetedby terrorist groups.

In 2021, the participation of our Defence and Security Forces in the national development effort recorded new achievements, with amongst others, the creation of a number of social infrastructures for the benefit of various institutions.

In accordance with its international commitments, Cameroon has deployed an 8th contingent of peacekeepers as part of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Mission for the Stabilization of the Central African Republic. Contacts with this brother and neighbouring country are permanent and close at the highest level, just as they are also with all the neighbouring countries of ours.

In 2022, supporting reconstruction projects in regions affected by terrorist scourge initiated by the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, will be one of our main priorities, the other being security coverage of the 33rd edition of the African Cup of Nations, a competition, which will kick off in just a few days.

It is understood that the success of this sporting event with repercussions of various kinds, will undoubtedly strengthen the attractiveness and prestige of Cameroon on the continental and world stage. The Defence and Security Forces intend to make a significant contribution, by giving it, the full measure of their expertise and commitment, whose seriousness has never been denied.

In the meantime, we bow with emotion to the memory of our brothers in Arms who fell in 2021 in military and law enforcement operations. Their bloodshedwill be our motivation in continuing the exhilarating citizen battles that with Honour and Loyalty we have waged together.
