As far back as we can go, threats to State security have never flourished as they have in the last three decades. On virtually every continent, fundamentalist, separatist and criminal organisations have emerged or are experiencing a resurgence of activity, with unprecedented levels of violence. The Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat in North Africa, Al Qaeda, the Islamic State Organisation, Al-Nusra and many other violent extremist groups in the Middle East, and drug trafficking gangs in Latin America are all symptomatic of the persistent terrorist nature of the actors of the new insecurity.
Their offshoots and other affiliations are numerous on the African continent. From the shores of the Mediterranean to the Mozambique Channel, from the Sahel-Saharan arc to the Horn of Africa and, increasingly, to the countries of the Gulf of Guinea.
As far as Cameroon is concerned, we would have thought ourselves lucky if we only had Boko Haram to fight. Unfortunately, the Islamist threat has been joined by a dubious and clearly imported separatism. In fact, and Cameroonians know this well enough, the unrest sowing terror and death in our western regions is instigated from outside and has no local roots. Proof of this is that its instigators are all based abroad, supported by foreigners and following the orders of their financiers.
Liberators of lies who have never built anything in our country, if anything they have destroyed it. They have never helped anyone, except to die.
In spite of their acts, the barbarity of which defies all morality, these executioners are supported by a systematic campaign of slander against Cameroon, aimed at weakening our institutions by discrediting them, at breaking our cohesion by creating disunity, at demoralising our formidable defence mechanism by depriving it of its popular legitimacy and, finally, at disintegrating our beautiful country so that it disappears.
In the wake of this slanderous madness, and to move charitable souls, the Defence and Security Forces are accused of committing multiple abuses and crimes, from the disproportionate use of force to the burning of medical facilities, not to mention extrajudicial killings. Their misleading and slanderous campaign knows no limit and goes as far as reversing realities and perceptions.
Yet the reputation of our Defence and Security Forces remains sterling and enviable. Our charismatic Defence and Security Forces are recognised globally for their professionalism, patriotism and humanity.
But in this murderous and misleading campaign against us, it does not matter what others think or say about us. It doesn’t matter how much we suffer. What matters is our attitude in the face of adversity. As long as we remain united, Cameroon will triumph over its enemies. /-
