Cameroon - Honor and Loyalty : THE WORLD AT A CROSSROADS: Africa must choose its path

The 80th anniversary of the landing of the Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy in France has just been celebrated with great fanfare. Sixth June 1944 marked the beginning of the second phase of the liberation of European countries that had fallen under the yoke of other European countries. The first part of this rescue process had begun a few months earlier with the landing in Italy, an operation in which African soldiers took an active part, having just distinguished themselves in the deserts of the continent against the dreadful Afrika Korps of the famous German tactician, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel.

This chapter in the glory story of the North African spahis and the sub-Saharan African riflemen will soon be forgotten unless politicians and historians take it upon themselves to exalt it to the extent of the ingratitude of the peoples whose survival and development are linked to the sacrificial renunciation of Africans. These are the same people planning to reclaim territories in Africa, as was the case after the Berlin Conference of 1884. That was 140 years ago. At that time, the aim was to avoid fratricidal wars between colonialists, especially in Europe.

We all know what happened afterwards. The great minds, the guardians of universal and civilisational values, proved incapable of keeping their word. Barely thirty years later, in 1914, the First World War broke out in Europe and hostilities spread to the Congo Basin, even though it had been declared a neutral zone.

Here we are in 2024, and once again, the ingredients for the next global conflict are slowly coming together from this continent that wonders when it will finally know peace. The film of current events is so confusing, its messages so contradictory and its main protagonists so hypocritical, that many people abandon themselves to the sole contemplation of this scene of planetary conspiracy.

In this age of cut-throat competition, the quest for profit and material superiority seems to have robbed man of his humanity. The instinct for self-preservation, the desire for brotherhood, the impulse for curiosity, the ability to think, religious or secular morality - all these elements that have enabled humanity to survive and prosper on earth are in the process of being forcibly rendered obsolete. Under the unending bombardment of messages full of false pretences, bright lies and dark truths, even the sight of vast tracts of land hastily cleared by bulldozers, with their thousands of crevices serving as makeshift graves for the unfortunate victims of natural disasters and bomb attacks, even the sight of this misery no longer manage to arouse the slightest emotion, the slightest feeling of compassion.

So there is nothing to be expected from those for whom war is the continuation of politics, not the pursuit of peace or justice, but of domination and monopoly. History is littered with examples of how the only promises they keep are those of a bleak future.

For once, Africa has the opportunity and the space to determine its future in this world that is once again at a crossroads, so let us together show courage and intelligence by choosing the path of our affirmation. We don’t care if it is the steepest. /-
