It’s almost a week that the hearts of football lovers have been beating fast, slowing down and starting again, depending on whether the action on the field of play is favourable or unfavourable to the team that one holds dear. In the same spirit, kicks, headers, drop shots and heel strikes are given on the round ball that as a spectator, one cannot however reach. Whatever, the magic happens, as the images, reports, commentaries and predictions come together.
For the duration of the 2022 Football World Cup which is currently taking place in Qatar, the world will merge at every match, at least, as long as non-sporting aims do not interfere with the outpouring of sympathy, or even fraternity, that lead most people to come together, to better savour their passion for football by sharing it.
For some time now, sports in general, and football in particular, has become the object of fierce competition of another kind, since it does not take place on any regulated surface, without any referee, but rather in the often sordid backstage of geopolitics. A thick cloud of suspicions of influence peddling, financial compromises, and media cliques hangs over the world of sports, to such an extent that one has the right to question the sincerity of the smear campaigns, against a backdrop of claims, which flourish at some sporting events.
From defending undiscovered species to legalising the right to abortifacient homicide, consecrating narcotics as a universal medication and forging political transitions, sports now serves as a platform, without the betterment of the lives of athletes being the most important element.
Friendship through sports, a slogan dear to soldiers around the world, has become outdated, and implicitly replaced by exclusion through sports. Recent host country of the football African Cup of Nations, Cameroon has received its fair share of slander and ridicule over the longevity in power of its leaders. What has that got to do with sports?
Certainly none, except that it was necessary to warm up spirits in anticipation of possible mood swings quickly qualified as popular revolution. However, against all expectations from detractors, Cameroonians have been able to remain united and determined in the face of this adversity whose envious and jealous nature cannot be hidden.
However, this campaign was not extinguished by the fires of AFCON 2021, with a slim chance given our team, The Indomitable Lions, leaving for Qatar 2022. We are indeed there, and this is far from being a mere safari trip. The same goes for all other disciplines whose teams represent Cameroon at the international level.
It is therefore clear that with the popular support for its commitment to sports in all its forms, Cameroon has resolved to become a player in the geopolitics of world sports, rather than a stake on the table of global sports.
