CAMEROON - HONOR AND LOYALTY : THE CAMEROONIAN ARMY : FAITHFUL, LOYAL AND RESPECTFUL GUARDIAN OF REPUBLICAN INSTITUTIONS 

The role and place of the army in a democracy. This has been an acute problem in a number of countries where the army, or the many factions that have taken its place, have been involved in the running of the territory, sometimes even acting as the governing body. This has never been the case in Cameroon, where the army has always been a faithful, loyal and respectful guardian of Republican Institutions.


By carefully cultivating its unitary DNA and political neutrality, the Cameroonian army has over time become a strong force for peace, stability, security and prosperity, a rare exception in the long procession of countries then considered to be developing countries.


Indeed, development was to be one of the main fields of action of the Cameroonian army, since the erosion of the ideological antagonisms between East and West had, among its many consequences, removed the spectre of interstate war. The room for manoeuvre created by the disappearance of this threat strengthened the Cameroonian army’s determination to put its dual capabilities at the service of the people.


The dual nature of military occupations meant that they could be applied to the civilian sector, enabling the army to support the construction of tangible and intangible precursors to development. The opening up of communication routes throughout the country and the construction of medical, health and educational facilities, both inside and outside the barracks, which are freely accessible to the civilian population, are just some of the quality services that reflect the Cameroonian army’s commitment to operations other than war.

This versatility and the level of performance now achieved are the result of methodical, long-term training focused on excellence. Thanks to numerous partnerships throughout the world, Cameroon’s military personnel have gone in search of the best in terms of knowledge and expertise. On the ground in the country, these cognitive and functional achievements are reproduced in the knowledge transmission chain, tested and adapted to local realities.


One example of how Cameroonian soldiers have taken these skills and applied them to the specificities of our environment is the production of anti-covid face masks. In addition to significant financial savings, this initiative has spared our army the stress of a likely strategic shortage of this speculation, which has rapidly become a global economic, security and health issue.



In this respect, the construction of infrastructures such as the Central Vehicle Repair and Reconstruction Facility, the Naval Workshops and the Air Force Specialist Training Schools are all major investments made by the taxpayers for the benefit of their Armed Forces, investments that are made more profitable by carrying out civil-military actions.


In addition to its statutory defence and security missions, the Cameroonian army’s operational agenda now includes mobility support, logistical and medical support, air transport, civil protection and the protection of the economic fabric. Having won the acceptance of all citizens, the crucible of national unity intends to make the most of the minimum it has been given. If this is what value for money is all about, the Cameroonian army would be an example to be followed in this area too. /-
