CAMEROON - HONOR AND LOYALTY :

20 MAY 2025: COHESION AS THE UNITARY DNA OF THE CAMEROONIAN NATION

It is said that people know themselves only when they measure themselves against obstacles. These obstacles seem to be the scale on which they put the quantity and quality of their material resources at the service of their physical and intellectual abilities, their determination to overcome the difficulties and, above all, the strength of their conviction in the pursuit of their chosen ideals. This applies to both individuals and peoples.

During the long and painful period of dual foreign occupation, the people of Cameroon maintained their conviction that their true nature could only be realised in Unity, and their determination to achieve it. There were many battles on both sides of the demarcation line, which was drawn by the occupying forces, and diehard patriots fought many heroic civic, trade union and political battles. However, the most significant event was the referendum that forever sealed the Unity of the Cameroonian people — a Unity that was not an option, but an existential necessity.

This necessity is expressed in the theme of the 53rd National Day of the Unitary State: “Army and Nation united for a Cameroon turned towards peace and prosperity”.

More than half a century after warding off the demons of division, it is clear that the Cameroonian people are once again facing dangers that could threaten their survival as a homogeneous and prosperous entity. This is because separatism, terrorism and religious fundamentalism pose challenges in many ways, at a time when the issues and constraints of economic liberalism and rapid globalisation take centre stage.

Previous generations faced similar challenges, whether in achieving Independence or Reunification. Just as freedom and unity were vital necessities for those patriots, so too are unity and peace for us. However, wishing for it is not enough to make it a reality.

In these uncertain times, when the foundations of our society are crumbling, Unity and Peace are two precious assets that can only be preserved through the deep-rooted conviction of every citizen—civilian and military alike—that they share the national community’s desire for indivisibility.

On 20 May 2025, Cameroon’s diverse ethnic groups came together in a spectacular parade and popular celebration. In keeping with tradition, the Cameroonian army was present everywhere, leading the marching columns. This is a great privilege that comes not from possessing weapons of war, but from the power of cohesion.

Cohesion is in the DNA of the Cameroonian army, the first of our institutions to have national jurisdiction, beyond the administrative area boundaries. Cohesion is also a mission, with the fundamental imperative of uniting all the sons and daughters of the Fatherland under the flag of the Republic.

The courage, determination and brilliance demonstrated in accomplishing this seemingly impossible mission have earned our army the title “Melting Pot of National Unity”.

This is more than a title of nobility, it is a lasting legacy preserved by the daily actions of men and women of duty, ready to give their sweat and blood for the triumph of the ideal of unity of their glorious forefathers, their ideal. /-
