Christmas is here... O sweet night... In just over 72 hours, this gentle message of hope will join the chimes announcing the Nativity. For some, it’s a moment of divine enchantment, the coming into the world of the Saviour of mankind, for others the Prophet and Herald of Salvation.
These reflections on the meaning of Christmas, although diverse and sometimes different, leave no one indifferent when it comes to celebrating the moment. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and animists all wish each other a Merry Christmas. The same goes for Happy New Year, Barka da Sala or simply Shalom!!!
This shows the power of great moments of religious excitement over denominational currents of thought. A power that unites sometimes divergent theocratic philosophies. A power that inhibits obscurantist, exclusionary and bloodthirsty impulses. In addition to the communicative and emotional excitement generated by religious celebrations, there are permanent or opportunistic social phenomena, such as the sharing of feasts, itself preceded by the sudden rise in the price of foodstuffs on the markets, all fuelled by the desire of everyone to take part in the festivities, regardless of their denominational affiliation.Whichever way you look at it, Christmas is an opportunity for socialising and fraternising that each of us deserves to enjoy to the full, but only if we make the effort to do so.
This means keeping a clear head, especially in the face of piles of food and a lot of fizz, because indigestion and drunkenness are among the causes of accidents, sometimes serious ones. And very often, the most frequent victims of these children’s feasts are not the ones you might think. Post-Christmas reports show that when it comes to the most reckless behaviour, it’s the parents - today’s grown-ups – who, sadly, win the trophy for losing their faculties due to excessive drinking.
Others who need to keep a clear head and their feet on the ground are road users, especially drivers of stationary or moving vehicles. In both cases, the strictest precautions should be taken to avoid turning our roads into bumper car tracks, with the tragedies that follow. It’s up to each one of us to make Christmas a leaven and a season of true worship, marked by our common belief in kindness, love and goodness, and by our common hope in the Redemption, the prelude to what some call resurrection and others reincarnation.May this time of meditation, renewal and joy bring us the greatest gift of all: brotherhood. Merry Christmas!!!
