Mpox CLAD1-B. a dreadful acronym for oblivious people whereas it is the name of the latest variant of monkeypox, a disease which has been classified as a new international public health emergency, according to the World Health Organisation. It does not take much to set in mechanisms of monitoring, protection and curbing of this health hazard which is, lethal and unpredictable, yet has no wide media coverage on its sensitisation like the predecessor, COVID-19.
In doing so, perhaps, it is to avoid another period of intense stress, as we know the trauma left behind by the barrier measures of the years 2020-2022 which has not yet been overcome.
Except that closing our mouths, eyes and ears to this scourge cannot prevent its spread.
The constant vigilance that is required in such cases should be the attitude to be adopted by everyone, but it constitutes, by far, the safest means for people whose social or professional activity depends on gatherings or interactions, is through respecting restricted spaces and reducing physical contact and movements. This concerns among others, Defence and security personnel, travelers, learners and teachers in the educational community, workers, as well as people who visit public places such as markets and other places of worship.
Contact with contaminated objects and respiratory particles such as spittle are other ways of contamination.
Since Mpox is transmitted through different species, particularly from animals to humans, it is imperative to redefine hygiene measures that should dictate our contact with wild animals, be it alive or dead, and similar precautions should also be taken regarding our interaction with our pets.
