With the end of the Cold War and the gradual extinction of the last proxy wars based on ideological antagonisms, there was great hope that the likelihood of international conflict would finally cease to exist. But in less time than it takes to say it, war was back, dismantling old states, creating brand new ones, and plunging others into chronic institutional incapacity. And the struggle continues, with its countless low-intensity conflicts that plague our planet, to the current high-intensity, indeterminate confrontations, constantly escalating, with violations of red lines.
Long predicted by various backroom agencies, this return to war adds to the already numerous worries of a humanity on the brink of collapse. Given the dizzying pace at which epidemics, climatic disasters and, more seriously, man-made catastrophes follow one another, it’s a safe bet that some people in positions of power have decided to move towards post-humanity or, in the happiest of hypotheses, a substantial reduction in the size of the human population. In any case, there are big dark clouds hanging over the future of our species.
With human help, the Grim Reaper seems to have developed a new, more frenetic, more insatiable bulimia. Hundreds die every day. And as if the pace wasn’t fast enough, there is increasing talk of the possible use of nuclear weapons. It doesn’t matter if it’s tactical or strategic, because it guarantees thousands of deaths every time it’s detonated, and even thereafter. The thumb that presses the famous red button most often will be hailed as a hero.
At the same time, the very people who are threatening our Africa with extinction are planning to return and take possession of the lands they once discovered as if they had never been inhabited. The pretexts are ready and the scenarios invented. On the one hand, it will be a question of sending expeditionary forces to help us incompetents fight the terrorist scourge. On the other hand, these same military expeditions will provide a framework for the humanitarian multinationals that have rushed in to save our peoples from starvation after being ravaged by war, wars, their wars. These are laudable intentions if ever there were any. Except that these interventions will be of unlimited duration and projection.
Some malicious tongues will speak of invasions. And rightly so. For behind the arrogance and sophistry of speech lies the thinly veiled subtlety of sowing the seeds of suspicious mistrust in the minds of the people. Otherwise, what is the purpose, other than disunity, of boasting that we have on our payroll officials from a foreign state trained by us? What other result than power struggles do we want to see as a result of these internal quarrels that we have cleverly orchestrated?
Now that the future enemy has made his intentions clear, do we still have the excuse of surprise or incompetence? Will we fall into the trap of flimsy evidence set for us by fighting each other instead of forming a united front against nostalgic and vengeful adversity?
For the peace of our countries and our freedom, let us remain the sole masters of our destiny, let us say NO to recolonisation. Let this be our red line. /-
